A man, a woman and their four daughters live in a log cabin in a snowed-in village that lies jammed between high rocky mountains. The catholic belief and strong belief in sagas has a great influence on their daily lives. After an accident whereby the man dies, the woman and their adult daughters are left behind in mourning. At that moment the atmosphere of the film becomes dreamy. A sort of winter sleep. Deermen appear. They are figures who determine the duration of the mourning period. Winterstilte (2008) Reviews
Touchy Poetic Experience
First of things; consider this movie as a poem or a material of musical art. I don't say this is obligated and all, but, as the director of the movie also implies, is necessary if you intend to see the piece as a whole, and this is the thing about what we call it cinema. Winterstilte contains a strong influent of symbolism and lyric interpretation. From the beginning to the end, with Deer Men and all, the piece does not lead a linear way of going on and is obviously in a worry to tell what it wants to tell in a different way than we see in everyday cinema. And, as what the director of the movie itself has said in !f Istanbul Film Festival, before screening, don't push yourself to get what movie wants to tell you by using heavy symbolism and ruin it, because this is exactly what makes it harder for yourself.
Avoid this movie at all costs! Utter bore!
This movie fails at everything it tries to achieve. Even the potentially beautiful scenery it is set in lacks the beauty on the screen due to the ridiculous use of filters. Winterstilte sets out to be a very artistic film about a solitary living family of a mother and her four daughters. during the scenes in which we see the family go about their everyday business of knitting and cooking the girls, very dramatically and artistically, don't speak a word. Also when the 'Deer men' arrive, nobody says a thing. The looks on the faces of the poor actresses who threw way their acting career with this horribly boring flick are obviously supposed to be very meaningful. In fact the dramatic looks do little but bore us to death since there is no plot to speak of at all. The use of stop-motion-ish images of the nightly scenery are just annoying. It really tries but this movie is absolutely not artistic in any way. It is only utterly boring. There is nothing in this movie that is worth watching. avoid!
