Trouble on the Corner (1997) Reviews

  • A man slowly loses his mind while trying to save others

Trouble on the Corner is a riveting, tightly written and beautifully directed debut film by a highly promising director. The cast could not be better and their individual work adds up to one of the tightest screen ensembles I have seen in a long time. The thought that this film has not been picked up for distribution is a shame to the business and to film lovers. It is a complete film from start to finish, that should be seen whenever possible. Alan Madison is a name to remember and a writer/ director to work with.

  • Next level of voyeurism

If you like 'em weird, you gotta see this one. Nothing makes sense, no character behaves in a normal way and the dialogues are artificial (with an emphasis on 'art'). Although cinematographically not really high standard, the makers of this film are creative enough to make it watchable. Do not expect some cleverly crafted plot lines or carefully directed emotional developments. But do expect some quite interesting, utterly odd but well-acting characters. Outcast city people acting smart but ruining their lives. Well no, forget that, I don't think any serious commentary on daily life is meant to surface here. People who like this kind of movie should really go see one (any one) of the masterpieces by Dutch film maker Alex van Warmendam.

  • Stick this one near the end of your list.

"Trouble..." is a dark and almost macabre drama which straddles the thin line between fantasy and reality as it tells of a psychologist or psychiatrist (They don't seem to know the difference in the film) who, beset with patients with troubles (duh) and an asexual wife, slowly loses it. A mildly interesting drama worth a look but should be near the end of your lists of things to watch on cable/broadcast.

  • A quirky independent film featuring the talented Edie Falco

Oddball people in a funky New York apartment building interrelate in ways sure to keep you watching this film. This is good black comedy, superbly crafted and woven together with some wonderful character actors. I am collecting films with the gifted Edie Falco, and this a find, along with "Judy Berlin" and "Cost of Living". My only hesitation .... the ending seems a little too over the top. But overall, a very good watch.
