This Side of the Dirt' is a South Texas family drama steeped in satire and humor. The story takes place days after the death of the family patriarch, Papo. We find his daughter, Jean Ann, alone and weeping as she comes to terms with her loss. As each new character enters her home the layers of her pain and paranoia unfold. In an effort to curb her insecurities Jean Ann only intensifies them by creating more drama around her. As her paranoia builds -- putting her marriage and friendship on the line -- she enters a downward spiral believing the small talk over the people she loves most. It isn't until the spirit of Papo returns that she re-anchors herself and is able to pull back in everything she thought she'd lost.

where is the charm
Its not comedy, its joking, yes, but not something that makes your tears flow, or loose your breath from laughter. its a b-movie, with the same b-actors ive seen many a time. im ashamed to say that i smelled the kinda quality already from the intro. its a family meshed up and death has driven them into emotional mayhem. the grand old man of this grand estate has left his son, the man to take over the role as family boss, a job that can never be achieved by him, and it is his skruwd up paranoid wife going through agonizing pain and terror, because she thinks the man is cheating on her. it is the handy(pool-)man at the hacienda, that has a a good relationship with everybody, and works more as a solemate than a bathmatt, and he is on the verge of marrying the mans daughter, and the other children a boy and a girl, drives the mum crazy, as she believes them having a incestous relationship, and she is overwhelmed by the fact( she thinks) that the daughter is pregnant with the son. its total chaos, until the ''dinner of thoughts'' begins. this ill leave to you to watch, its totally insane. the technical quality of this media flick is merely bad, especially the sound work, and the quality of picture are like using a hd photo camera, instead of a cell phone or a hi-tech cam. the total is shown very well in this product. its 3 for the humour, and 3 for quality, so the grumpy old man awards 3 to this rump of texan humour, and may this one be on this side of the dirt.
Fun Dramedy
This is a fun ride about a very dysfunctional blended family coping with the loss of the family patriarch. It's a great lesson in what your imagination can cook up when you let it and ultimately a sweet, loving story about coming together through hardship. The film is based on a play so it's dialogue-heavy and there's not a ton of action (until the dinner scene), but there are lots of funny moments throughout. If you're from or familiar with Texas, you'll also get a lot of the fun Texas references. I wouldn't describe it as a "cannabis-Infused comedy," but rather a dysfunctional family dramedy, with Texas-sized drama. Wray Crawford who plays the husband gives a standout, authentic performance and I think the ensemble as a whole does a nice job. Also notable is Jae McCain who plays the cannabis-infused son. Also worth noting that this production is the brain child of Tito Beveridge of Tito's vodka, although peculiarly I don't remember any vodka references in the film.
