American Filipina viewpoint...Just go watch it :)
I liked it. Go watch it with some queer (allies included) friends that are mature enough to want to learn about another culture and some Tagalog (Philippines national language) I'm coming from a lens of a Filipina-American POV. I'm proud that they put this movie out and it would be helpful to know the culture to have a better appreciation of this movie. The title hints to the pop culture of the PI. Rome and Juliet?! When I saw that title I already was skeptical because that is typical of the filipino culture to do a play of words in the title. It's rather funny. And, cheesy! Also, it is obvious part of the story line was copied from the movie Imagine Me and You. But don't expect a comedy. This is filipino drama at a well acted level. Story line was quite choppy. There are elements to it that I could see that the director wanted to express an artistic semi-indie-esque feel like voice overs of Juliet reading poetry and lots of emo music. I quite by accident discovered this movie on youtube. The subtitles are at par and I don't understand why they created subtitles when they speak English. Annoying. How I appreciate this movie is I get to see the American / Spanish / catholic influences that impact the main character's growth and confusion about this unexpected new found love. Watching Rome consult a nun was a surprise to me and again made me think about my filipino heritage. The theme (which I've noticed has been a recurring theme in the past 20 years) in the LGBT community: Two best friends happen to fall in love. This happened to me so again another reason I could connect to it. If you're looking for steamy sex scenes, there really aren't any compared to today's standard. Expect a made for t.v. lesbian movie. If you're looking to chill and see a love story with a happy ending (however drawn out) then go grab a loved one, some Halo-Halo (a filipino dessert) and watch it. I really did like the acting between Mylene Dizon and Andrea Del Rosario. They were sweet and tender. And Mylene is just eye candy.
Very Good Movie
I just got finished watching this movie and I must say that I was very impressed! I also enjoyed the music, especially the rock song playing during the end credits. I am definitely going to buy the soundtrack. I thought that the 2 lead actresses were very beautiful and did a good job at portraying Rome & Juliet. The guy was portrayed Juliet's finance (Marc) was very handsome. I also wanted to slap Marc's mother b/c she seemed like such a snob being rude to her cook and trying to be picky about Juliet's teaching uniform. The 2 scenes in the poetry venue was really nice, along with the talented musicians really playing good music with the guest poets. I thought that the 2nd scene where Rome is coming out in front of the poet venue guests about her real true feelings for Juliet and embracing each other right then and there in front of the guests at the poet venue. The climax made me want to cry because after all that Juliet has been through, you begin to cheer for Rome and Juliet to be together.
what a wonderful story
This movie is surprisingly good. The story is a bit long and the ending is a bit short. But overall, it is a great movie. The lead actresses have a very good chemistry together, which makes it very believable. It describes how difficult it is for them to accept themselves and eventually for others to accept them. Sometimes it is not easy to accept your true self but both of them come to an understanding to accept themselves for who they are in order to pursue happiness in life. They both start off as very good friends and eventually fall in love with each other. The music is a bit lacking but I would still highly recommend this movie to anyone.
Beautiful movie.
I finally got to see this after over a year of waiting-it was worth it!!. This is a well written and acted film, full of forbidden love and passion. Juliet is a pre-school teacher about to marry her politician boyfriend when she hires wedding planner Rome to organise it all. They quickly form a bond that deepens into a soul consuming love. They finally act on their feelings but then the fiancé finds out and a lot of melodrama ensues, before you get a rare happy ending. At over 2 hours it could get boring but I was engrossed throughout. It's not a perfect movie though, some of the audio is at times shaky, the subtitles aren't as good as they could be, and their are multiple heterosexual love scenes whereas the love scene between the girls is very tame in comparison-but what you do see is romantic. It also leaves a few unanswered questions at the end to do with the other characters. Even with those complaints it's still become a favourite of mine.
True story of lesbians in the Philippines.
I have to say that this movie is a promising movie in Asian cinema about homosexuality. it lays out the hardships on being a homosexual in a society that doesn't understand you. Great acting too. i really enjoyed the chemistry between main characters. I hope to see more of these movies in the future.
