How Not to Propose (2015) Reviews

  • Script was lacking

I never got the sense that the two actually were truly in love and then the looming ex boyfriend was just oddly placed. I kept waiting for them to decide to go their separate ways. There was a real disconnect with this script. Like they decided to string together a bunch of events and call it movie. The script was lacking even for a TV movie. One thing I will say about PixL movies is they highlight the supporting characters. However there could've been a lot less of the parents sitting around discussing their daughter. The side story with the brother and the best friend was a lot more interesting though. They should've told that story instead.

  • A Love Story Without the Love

The entire film, with the exception of the last 12 minutes, was filled in tension. For the female lead character her tension was a dream job in Germany. For the male lead character was him proposing marriage to her. She didn't know he was going to (though it seemed alluded to in the beginning), and he didn't know about her dream job until toward the end. The problem for me was: their relationship seemed unaffectionate, in my opinion. Until the end, of course. Those last 12 minutes. The tension seemed boring. She has news to tell him, and he wants to propose marriage even though he got fired, and other minor setbacks. I was more interested in the subplot with his brother than I was in the main plot. And, what's with the title of the film? A romantic getaway isn't the setting for a proposal, even with the antics? (Car getting a flat, tent falling, couple at the hot tub etc.,) The ending was cliché and redundant. So, right before he actually is going to propose, she tells him. And, he tells her to go but then he finds out that a book he wrote gets published and then he tells her not to go, and marry him instead. That told me that he only loved her by his success not by hers, or a combination of each other's. I mean, when she finally told him, what he should have said was go and that he'd go with her. I mean, he was jobless. He really had no ties to home, and apparently he really loved her, right? It seemed a bit misogynistic; as if only his love for her mattered and her love for him, and her dreams etc., didn't. Also, what was with the other guy? Her college "friend"? That storyline seemed to suggest she was going to cheat on him but that subplot went nowhere. Why have it in there if nothing was going to be done with it? It actually seemed they had more affection for each other than the main characters. There was some comedic parts, and I feel that was the only thing enjoyable about the entire film. It was sappy, and not in the good way. 4/10
