Fairies (2003) Reviews
Strange but fun
It opens with a gay boy being bullied by his horribly homophobic classmates (except for one). Even the gym teacher goes after him. However in his drama class he excels. They're doing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and will perform it on stage. He's playing Puck. Then, while performing it, he imagines it as an elaborate fantasy. He's singing (a great voice BTW), the rest of the cast joins in and then they start to dance! And he gets the man of his dreams at the end (almost). The songs are great, the singing good and some pretty good dancing too. There's also a hysterical closing scene with the gym class. All in all a very strange but satisfying feature. All gay teenagers should see this film.
'Faries' a favorite of Philly Film Fest
I just saw 'Fairies' at the Philadelphia LGBT Film Festival 2004 (our 10th anniversary year!). 'Fairies' was shown with 5 other short films. This film packs a lot of creativity into the 20-minute running time! Judging from the audience's reaction-- spontaneous & vocal applause -- the crowd liked this film the best. I certainly did! This little gem has: a fabulous story; empathetic actors; brilliant music; excellent pop singing; and a professional look in every detail. Oh, gotta mention the film's star, James McKay, is the dreamiest guy ever!
Absolutely Awesome Short Film
"Faries" is a masterpiece. Thomas Gustafosn has taken an old Shakespearean favorite and allowed it to flourish in our modern world by creating a story around it that we all can relate to. Excellent piece of film. You will find yourself immersed the colorful world that he has created. It is visually appealing and sensual. It is a mesmerizing experience. And, as has been said before, the lead is just horribly cute. It's enough to make you sick... Awww. So cute... I really can't think of anything negative to say about this film. It catches your attention and holds it through-out.
I don't know...
but that james mckay has got one of the sexiest singing voices i have ever heard. If anyone out there has any information to contact him I would pay TOP DOLLAR for it. The movie is wonderful, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and I am hoping beyond hope that the creators are considering a feature length version. I'm thinking Hugh Jackman as the coach... If anyone knows of anything else this "Tom Gustafson" has done please post it. He has an original and creative voice that is rare in todays often times conformative(sp?word?) and downright boring movie industry. In closing, as a non-homosexual living in a crazy gay world I feel like this short mirrors the way I feel about the women I crave and their misunderstanding towards me. Thank you. Good night.
