Based on the real-life scandal that shocked Victorian-era England, the film tells the story of Euphemia ''Effie'' Gray. Lonely and frustrated Effie is drawn to pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais, and finds a friend and champion in Lady Elizabeth Eastlake.
