Another Blair Witch roll-out
DARK AMAZON is yet another BLAIR WITCH rip-off, albeit one made with a south-of-the-border setting. The back story is mildly interesting, incorporating the search for a cure for cancer, but the execution is strictly pedestrian. Once again a group of non-interesting characters and their guides head off for an expedition into unexplored territory, only to find themselves menaced by some snarling, unseen creature in the dark. It's a familiar play-out with the expected shaking camerawork and scares, and one that barely raises an eyebrow, let alone the pulse.
More like a cure for insomnia
A group of scientific researchers head into the Amazon rain forest in the search for a cure for cancer & film their every move (unoriginal!). This is more Blair Witch than Cannibal Holocaust, so those wanting gore move along. To be fair good use is made of the real Amazonian locations. Sadly that's the only good thing. Acting is mediocre. The twist at the end is reasonable, must admit I didn't see it coming. However, what lets this film down so bad is that it is incredibly boring! Nothing horrific happens until about an hour in & when it does it really is tame. It may only be approx. 80 minutes long but it really does drag. Just like zombies & slashers the market is over saturated with poor found footage movies - and this is one.
It's the canoe's guy foot
The production starts off with the end found footage of a green ground cam and then works it way up to it. A group of people are follow migrating frogs in the Amazon Rainforest because they have evidence it produces an enzyme that can cure cancer. They listen to local folklore about the devil spirit Anhanga who protects locals from foreigners. One by one... The creature...did we see a hand?...makes Predator noises. We are subject to the green cam, ground cam, Mina screaming in the dark cam, foot cam, jerk cam, and "what is that?" cam. It was shot on location using real Brazilian customs, drink etc. The natives wore black Hanes under their loin cloths. The film gave us a false conspiracy message as the only new thing they added to found footage. Watch the Sean Connery version instead. Guide: F-word. No sex. National Geographic style nudity.
