By Appointment Only is a made for TV thriller that centers around the life of Val Spencer (Ally Walker) who becomes a Realtor after her husband commits suicide. She and her teenage son move to a new home in hope of putting their past behind them. On her first listing, Val must her help former neighbor, Jim sell his million dollar home after the death of his wife. However, when she returns to the home the next day to meet with a client, Jim is gone and a man claiming to be his nephew is watching over the house. However, due to her growing suspicions, Val has reason to believe that the man claiming to be his nephew may not be who he says he is and sets out to reach the truth as to the whereabouts of Jim. The film does last for around 80/90 minutes and does feel dragged out in places but it works to good effect at building up a feel of uncertainty. Overall, the acting is solid and the film does have some genuinely thrilling moments 9/10

  • Well-Crafted, Suspenseful Thriller

"By Appointment Only" is a fast-paced and extremely well-written thriller. The war of wills is between a real estate agent named Val, who desperately needs to close her first deal, and a psychopath who is holding the owner of the house hostage. The quick-thinking Val immediately suspects foul play when she shows the house to a client. Of course, the police will be of not help in this kind of film. Val must do everything on her own to thwart the villain. The narrative design of the film was carefully planned in a subplot of the relationship of Val and her young son, who are still recovering from the loss of their husband/father, who committed suicide. The young son Nick is having trouble adjusting to his new school, and Val is frantically desperately attempting to earn them a living in the tough profession of real estate. One scene in the film stands out when Val has a conference with the school principal and shares the traumatic experience of the death of her husband. Most of the film involves action within the house that is on the market. But this more subdued scene was thoughtful and well-performed by the actress, as it provided a human context for Val's situation. The villain of the film was especially nasty, and some of the scenes were too violent. But there was an interesting depiction of the owner of the home as a stoic, retired army general and former POW. The general's resilience in refusing to given the villain his priceless coins was pivotal in giving Val enough time to save the day.

  • Not a bad little film, but...

    rob1n2010-03-04

This is quite a good little film to while away an hour or so. It was engaging and entertaining. However, and this is where the spoiler comes in, was anyone involved with this film involved with diabetes! No use of an injection pen, the use of a bottle and syringe as shown is pretty archaic by any standard, but maybe there are people out there who find the old ways the best, they enjoy messing about like that, rather the the more simpler use of a pen with a disposable needle. Also, being a diabetic and knowing lots of other diabetics both type I and type II this part of the story just doesn't ring true. Maybe if the General had a heart condition then the story might have been somewhat improved. Of course that may have aroused the interest of those with heart conditions.
