Belahan Jiwa (2005) Reviews
brace yourself for a twist with this movie
I completely disagree with the previous comment about this movie. It was a clever film. It was not predictable and the twist at the end of the movie was unexpected. It is not trying to be clever it IS a clever film. The photography was well done and the acting good. It was interesting when each characters story becomes more intertwined, right up until the final twist of the story. It kept me on the edge of my seat. The plot was well planned and easy to follow. As the film goes on it slowly reveals more and more information and widens you understanding about the final end plot. It made for interesting watching and i strongly recommend this movie.
A failed attempt to be smart
The Indonesian movie world got its renaissance after "Ada Apa Dengan Cinta." Granted, it once sparked optimism inside me, that one day Indonesian movie truly could rule in its own soil. But after watching THIS movie, I was left feeling disillusioned. In short, the movie tells a story about the lives of (seemingly) five girls, each with different personalities, but surprisingly they all have one same boyfriend. Seems interesting, doesn't it? Hold it right there. I think this movie drew its inspiration from "The Hours," yep, the movie where Nicole Kidman wears prosthetic nose. But please, do not compare BJ with The Hours. BJ is all over the place, and in short: a colossal mess. There's no sensible storyline, I wonder what was going on in the writers' head when decided to write the screenplay. The subplots leading to the climax were totally pointless, since they do not attribute anything to give more meaning to the story. I believe this movie was trying to be smart, giving the audience some deep "philosophy" and harrowing facts about multiple personality, but it FAILED MISERABLY. Anyone who saw this movie in the theater deserve to demand their money back. (I watched it during an insomnia streak on TV) Once again: a total mess. The one acceptable thing about this movie was the cast. Not mind-blowingly good, but not exactly poor. Just OK. The rest was just.... awful. This movie gives a bad name to the infant Indonesian movie industry. It solidifies what my cousin once said about Indonesian movies, "Never watch an Indonesian movie in the theater, you'll feel duped."
